Intelligent Mobility Pte Ltd (IM) is a Singapore company which provides a unique combination of scanning technologies to make custom insoles. RESA is a USA-based subsidiary of IM, and they are a custom foot care and footwear company revolutionizing foot comfort. They manufacture custom-made orthotic insoles using IM’s proprietary gel scanning technology that captures high quality and reliable foot scans.

The outbreak of Covid-19 has greatly impacted IM’s ability to reach its full potential market, preventing customers from visiting physical stores to scan their feet using IM’s unique gel scanner and purchase customized insoles. 

Our project objective is to design an approach that empowers IM to reach customers from the comfort of their homes and enhance their user experience with the company.

Solution: 3D scanning mobile application

To address this issue, we devised an affordable, accessible, and user-friendly solution that reliably extracts necessary foot data to make a custom insole for customers. 

Leveraging on cutting edge technology, our solution comes in the form of a 3D scanning mobile application.  In particular, through rigorous experiments, we found that the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology was able to capture sufficient and accurate data that reflects depth information of the object scanned. 

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)

LiDAR scanning units can fire hundreds of thousands of pulses per second. These light waves bounce off objects and return to the LiDAR sensor. The sensor uses the time it takes for each pulse to return to calculate distance (time of flight). Each of these pulsed laser measurements, or returns, can be processed into a 3D visualization known as a ‘point cloud’. 

Our application leverages on the LiDAR available in iPhones via the front-facing “TrueDepth” camera; hence it is an iOS application.

After scanning, users can view their 3D models and crop them to remove background noise so that the model only includes relevant foot data.

Backend Database

Once the users have completed their scan for both feet, they can proceed to upload their 3D foot models into IM’s Database. Using the foot models, IM can extract the necessary foot data for insole making.


The development of our application has met the needs and expectations of IM to reach their customers amidst this global pandemic. Despite our successes thus far, our team believes that there is still a lot of potential for improvements in our application. Some examples of this are using a neural network in the future to generate more accurate insoles, shoe size matching and improving overall user experience design. With our application, we hope to make high-quality orthotics more accessible to more people and help them to better manage their foot conditions.
