Problem Statement:

Given the high density living environment in Singapore and that we are going through a pandemic where many of us could be working from home, we might be more affected by noise nuisance. Indeed, neighbourly noise conflicts have become a prevalent issue recently as there has been an increase in the volume of feedback received by the relevant agencies.

 

Project Objective:
Our interactive installation receives user input and returns feedback that aggregates the whole community’s responses to provide customised and specific insights/tips, thereby sparking conversation and reflection, promoting understanding of the community’s noise preferences.

This scheme lies at the heart of the solution. The key driver here is a critical mass of resident feedback that will fuel a sense of the community’s presence and a constantly adapting consolidation and communication of their needs.
 
This empowers the community to become more self-sufficient in understanding each other’s noise preferences without awkwardness. If residents proactively adapt their behaviour, this feedback cycle can bring the whole community to greater harmony.

 

If implemented successfully,  it could reduce the reliance on an overseeing body that might otherwise have to guess the needs and might provide less specific recommendations.

 

 

CORE ENGAGEMENT

 

Questions that were used to engage with residents --->

Profiling

Respondent will encounter a series of 3 questions, the profiling serves to contextualise their response and for us to draw correlations. 

Worse Noise

This set asks what noise is the respondent most affected by, and returns what the community is most affected by in the week, and then provides tips on how to address it. 

Silent Hours

This set asks for respondent’s ideal quiet hours, and compares it with the community’s aggregated hours, and reminds resident to be careful not to emit noise or to be more tolerant during certain hours, depending on whether respondent’s quiet hours are shorter or longer than the community’s average.

PILOT TEST

 

Time: 30 July 2021 (Friday), 2-5pm

Location: Simei MRT, between Baker Talent and Block 242, along Simei Street 3

No. of Respondents: 38

 

Good Observations:

1. Facade effectively attracts attention and frames space

2. Some were very engaged by the installation

3. Interface was intuitive and fun for younger respondents

 

 

Areas to be improved:

1. User experience generic due to lack of emphasis on custom insights

2. Many respondents had to be nudged to participate

3. Interface is less intuitive for older respondents
